Letrozole can cause fetal harm and should not be used during pregnancy for cancer treatment. When used for fertility treatment, it is given only under specialist supervision with appropriate timing in the cycle.
Because letrozole lowers estrogen levels, it may cause hot flushes, sweating, vaginal dryness, mood changes and other menopausal-type symptoms.
Long-term estrogen suppression may weaken bones. Your doctor may assess bone mineral density and recommend appropriate calcium, vitamin D, exercise or other treatment when needed.
Letrozole may affect blood lipid levels in some patients. Your doctor may monitor cholesterol and cardiovascular risk factors when appropriate.
Tell your doctor if you have liver disease. Patients with significant liver impairment may require a different dosing approach or closer monitoring.
Medicines containing estrogen may reduce the intended effect of letrozole. Tell your healthcare professional about hormone therapy, contraceptives, supplements and all other medicines you are taking.
When letrozole is prescribed to induce ovulation, it should be used only according to the fertility specialist's schedule. Do not self-medicate or use it without appropriate pregnancy and ovulation assessment.
